hello sir, i am currently doing my b.tech in petroleum engineering and i have decided to write GATE exam.
since no institutes offer petroleum engineering GATE training, i have planned to write GATE in chemical engineering. is that a good decision to write GATE in chemical instead of petroleum? and please tell me what is the scope of passing out GATE in chemical.

It would be really a wrong decision if you are switching from petroleum engineering to chemical engineering.
First competition in chemical engineering is more than petroleum engineering and since you are also not from petroleum engineering you need to prepare some extra than a chemical engineering GATE aspirant. So you are automatically get disadvantage from this decision at the primary stage of GATE exam preparation.
Second if you are taking this decision keeping in mind that you will use this GATE score for PSUs recruitment than again you are opting wrong option. Because PSUs demands same GATE paper qualifying in which you have completed your engineering graduation.

Most of the PSUs allow further studies but for this they will bound you in a bond. During bond period you have to work for them just after completing you higher studies.

25 out of 100 marks has been assigned for Education Qualification by ONGC.
Out of these 25 marks 20 marks are for your minimum education qualification which ONGC demand from a candidate. Like if a B Tech holder candidate secure 60% or above but less than 80% will get 15 marks out of 20 marks and those who secure more than 80% or above will get 20 out of 20. Rest 5 marks are for higher education.

For any PSU application through GATE there are two kind of restriction for a candidate.
First in which branch candidate have done B Tech degree.
Second in which GATE paper he/she appeared.
Point to be noted here is they need a candidate with both of these combine correctly.
When you will go through any notification of any PSU which recruit through GATE then you will find that they mention GATE paper for particular post as well as your B Tech degree for that particular post.

You will find that ONGC is considering only two branches of engineering under Petroleum engineering (1) Petroleum engineering & (2) Applied Petroleum engineering.
As per ONGC notification petrochemical engineering is not eligible. So you must enquire ONGC office about petrochemical engineering under.

1. My age is 32 may I fit in to PSU’s eligibility criteria becoz most of opening are for trainee, age is less than 30, very few opening are for age 33.

Yes most of the PSUs Age criteria is 30 for UR candidates. ONGC has 30 for UR candidates.
GATE 2016 score is valid for 3 years for getting admission into any educational institute.
PSUs demand only current year GATE score mostly.

Dear Admin,
I am currently doing my Masters in Oil & Gas Engineering from UK. I completed my Bachelors in Mechanical engineering in 2014 (from India). Am I eligible to write Petroleum Engineering paper or do I need to write Mechanical Engineering paper for recruitment in PSUs ? Please guide.

There are two things that PSUs require :
(1) Educational qualification
(2) GATE qualification
These both things must be co-related Like if you are applying for a post whose minimum education qualification is B Tech / B E then your education qualification must match with your GATE exam paper. Like if you apply for a post in any PSU for Mechanical engineer category then you have to complete your B Tech in Mechanical engineering as well as you must qualify GATE exam in Mechanical engineering paper.

I am btech petroleum engineering student. This year I will appear for GATE but I want to know that would ongc recruit from engineering science gate exam. As last year gate was not in petroleum so psu’s were recruiting chemical mechanical and xe. But this year petroleum is also in gate so is there any chances of xe gate paper.

ONGC & other PSUs which are recruiting though GATE, if there is a post suitable for petroleum engineers these PSUs will recruit petroleum engineers on the basis of petroleum engineering GATE score.

Can ECE students applied in instrumentation paper. Because I am from instrumentation paper. If ECE enters in our paper it will be crowded as india produces huge number of ece engineers.

There is no any paper separately for petroleum engineering in GATE in 2015 and have very less chances for GATE 2016. If you wanna do M Tech in petroleum engineering you need to qualify GATE in any one the following GATE paper codes, GATE Paper must be CE ,CH, GG (with Part B Geophysics), ME, MT or XE.
