You can buy study material if you wish those are designed as per GATE syllabus. But use them only for guidance only, study material of a coaching institute will not certain your success in GATE 2017.

R K Jain is good but if you would have other supportive books then it would be better for you. Because if you are preparing for GATE then you would face many issues in a single day then only those books will help you.

Yes almost all THM books are good but book of all subjects of TMH are not best.
So other publication comes also into consideration while choosing a book for a certain subject.

Guide books are for guidance but first you have to clear your basics which can be done only with the help of standard books.
So standard books are for building basics and guide books for further preparation.

You need a book of previous 20-30 years solved papers so that you can have a good idea abt GATE exam & its paper pattern.
Then you need an standard book of each subject so that you can get knowledge up to the level of GATE exam without any error.

It is rally hard to find a single book for a subject. If it possible than everyone will buy that book and everyone will top GATE exam.
Some books are good in some topics/chapters and some in others. So providing a book for each subject will not be a good advise.

If you are preparing for open competition like PSUs, railways, SSC then You may follow R S Khurmi or R K Jain any of these.
If you are preparing for GATE then you need to study each subject precisely so you need a standard book of each subject to understand each subject in depth.

Actually both books are good for mechanical MCQs. Both books contain theory as well as MCQs. The major difference is R S Khurmi is basic book for clearing your theoretical doubts with some MCQs while R. K. Jain contain large number of MCQs along with theory.
