PSU Selection Procedure 2024 | GATE & Non-GATE – The objective of the recruitment and selection procedures in the Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) is to select the best suitable candidate for a particular post.
Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) like NTPC, SAIL, ONGC, PGCIL, DMRC, AAI, IOCL are the few popular companies (out of many) in India.
These companies provide attractive pay scale, job security, good work environment that makes PSUs jobs best suited for technical candidates.
So not only students but also working professionals eagerly wait for PSU job notifications every year. We can classified PSUs in two categories on the basis of GATE score (requirement) as defined below :
- PSUs recruiting through GATE
- PSUs Not recruiting through GATE

1. Selection Procedure of PSU Recruiting Through GATE
Generally the recruitment and selection procedures followed in most of the PSUs which are recruiting through GATE score comprises of two stages :
- Shortlisting: Candidates are shortlisted based on their GATE scores. Some PSUs may also shortlist candidates based on their CSIR NET exam scores.
- Written exam: Some PSUs may conduct a written exam.
- Group discussions: Candidates may participate in group discussions.
- Personal interviews: Candidates may be called for personal interviews.
The selection process for Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) in 2024 may include: GATE 2024, CLAT 2024.

HPCL | Graduate Engineers | The recruitment for HPCL will be done on the basis of the score obtained by the candidates in the GATE exam. The candidates will have to fill the application form and the shortlisted candidates will be sent the call letter through post or email. |
SAIL | Management Trainee | On the basis of the GATE score and other eligibility requirements, the candidates will be called for the recruitment process. The candidates will have to appear for the Personal Interview and Health Evaluation round. The final selection list will be prepared on the basis of the score obtained in the GATE, Health Test, and PI. |
HAL | Management Trainee | The recruitment for HAL will be done on the basis of the score obtained by the candidates in the GATE exam. The candidates will have to fill the application form and the shortlisted candidates will be sent the call letter through post or email. |
NLC | Graduate Executive Trainee | The recruitment for NLC will be done on the basis of the score obtained by the candidates in the GATE exam. The candidates will have to fill out the application form and the shortlisted candidates will be sent the call letter through post or email. |
Power Grid | Executive Trainee | On the basis of the GATE score and other eligibility requirements, the candidates will be called for the recruitment process. The candidates will have to appear for the Group Discussion and Personal Interview round. Out of 100% marks weightage, 85% weightage will be given to the GATE score, 3% weightage to GD, and 12% weightage to the personal interview. The final selection list will be prepared on the basis of the score obtained in the GATE, GD, and PI. |
BHEL | Engineer Trainee | On the basis of the GATE score and other eligibility requirements, the candidates will be called for the recruitment process. The candidates will also have to appear for a Personal Interview round. Out of 100% marks weightage, 75%% weightage will be given to the GATE score and 25% weightage to the personal interview. The final selection list will be prepared on the basis of the score obtained in the GATE and PI. |
NTPC | Executive Trainee | On the basis of the GATE score and other eligibility requirements, the candidates will be called for the recruitment process. The candidates will have to appear for the Group Discussion and Personal Interview round. Out of 100% marks weightage, 85% weightage will be given to the GATE score, 5% weightage to GD, and 10% weightage to the personal interview. The final selection list will be prepared on the basis of the score obtained in the GATE, GD, and PI. |
GAIL | Executive Trainee | On the basis of the GATE score and other eligibility requirements, the candidates will be called for the recruitment process. The candidates will have to appear for the Group Discussion, Health Evaluation, and Personal Interview round. The final selection list will be prepared on the basis of the score obtained in the GATE, Health Test, GD, and PI. |
PSUs may have different selection criteria. Some PSUs may recruit candidates based only on their GATE scores. Others may conduct an entrance exam after shortlisting candidates.

Generally the weightage of different stages for selecting candidates in PSUs which are recruiting through GATE is as defined below.

PSUs in India can be categorised into four types based on parameters like listing in the Indian Stock Exchange, global presence, annual revenue, and income generated.

At the last a final list of selected candidates will be prepared on the basis of their written exam and GD/PI performance.
Those candidates will be called for Medical examination and Document verification. Purpose of medical examination is to check a candidates physical suitability for a particular post and document verification is to check a candidates educational suitability.
